Many local farmers bring their produce to sell in the marketplace, and some of our babies
been found here.
Bailee Egan was found
at the marketplace, where local farmers come to sell their produce. Not only is
produce sold there, also fresh meat, eggs, there were fish tanks full of
live fish, dried fish, etc.. basically anything edible.
The market is located on the western side of Yangchun.
If you drive to Yangchun over the very bumpy non-existant road (from Zhoaqing)
you'll drive right by it. The
Golden Roc Hotel is located on the same road, further down (probably about
1.5-2 miles).
The Welfare Institute is located only about 5 minutes from the Golden Roc.
It is located inside a compound, and consists of two buildings, that are generally
referred to by adoptive parents as the 'old orphanage' and the 'new orphanage'.
Prior to 1998, the babies were housed on one half of the third floor of
the old orphanage. After the new building was completed in January 1998,
the babies were moved to the new orphanage building, which is located
right behind the old building.
Jim Weaver was able to visit the old orphanage while adopting his
daughter in 1997. He said that only children over around 6 mos. of age
lived in the third floor room, the younger infants lived in a different
building. When Betsy Egan visited in October, 1997, she heard babies
crying in the building pictured here, and she thinks the infants
probably lived in this building. (Since January 1998, all children to
about age 2 live in the new orphanage. It is our understanding that
after age 2, they are moved to a foster home.)
The orphanage is located on a dead end street, the road stops at the
gate. The building on this page is the front building, you drive through
it into the courtyard. Once in the courtyard is the "park" featured in
the photos from Mrs. Yu 1997. Standing in the courtyard facing the new
ophanage, to the left is a fish rearing pond, and on the right the park.
There is a little bridge crossing the fish pond with a gazebo. Right
behind the park is the old building and directly behind that the new
building. Behind the new building is another open park-like area.
As you
drive up to the front gate, there are chickens in the yard next door,
and on the other side of the fish pond Betsy heard pigs squealing when
she visited. It was a real hoot!
